North Carolina Critical Illness Insurance

What is supplemental critical illness insurance and how does it help?
Critical illness insurance pays you a lump sum benefit in the event you are diagnosed with a critical illness. You probably know someone who has had a heart attack, stroke, or been diagnosed with cancer in the last six months.
With the many advances we have had in modern medicine, the chances of you surviving a critical illness are very good. That’s the good news! However, most of us are not prepared for the financial burden of recovery. Your North Carolina Health Insurance plan doesn’t come close to covering all your expenses.
  • How would you replace your income if you were not able to work?
  • How would you replace your spouse’s lost wages while he or she helps care for you?
  • Where would the money come from for home and car payments, deductibles, home health care, etc.
If you had a critical illness strike you and you had to add up your normal monthly bills, then subtract your lost income (and possibly your spouse’s) while you were recovering what would happen? For most of us this would equal a financial disaster!
What does a critical illness policy cover?
Typically a fully underwritten critical illness policy in North Carolina will pay up to the chosen benefit amount upon first diagnosis of:
  • Invasive Cancer (100%)
  • Non-Invasive Cancer (25%)
  • Heart Attack (100%)
  • Heart Transplant (100%)
  • Aortic Surgery (100%)
  • Heart Valve Replacement/Repair Surgery (100%)
  • Stroke (100%)
  • Coronary Bypass Surgery (25% - once per lifetime)
  • Angioplasty (10% - once per lifetime)
  • Advanced Alzheimer’s Disease (100%)
  • Accidental Loss of Speech (100%)
  • Benign Brain Tumor (100%)
  • Blindness (100%)
  • Deafness (100%)
  • Coma (not as a result of a stroke) (100%)
  • End-stage Kidney Failure (100%)
  • Loss of Limbs (100%)
  • Major Burns (100%)
  • Major Organ Transplant (100%)
  • Paralysis (not result of a stroke) (100%)
  • Motor Neuron Disease (100%)
  • Occupational HIV Infection (100%)

What benefit amounts can I choose from?
Benefit amounts range from $50,000 to $500,000 for the fully underwritten product. There is an option for a simplified policy that is not underwritten with benefits ranging from $10,000 - $50,000 (the simplified plan doesn’t cover all the conditions listed above).
By packaging together a critical illness policy, accident policy and an HSA medical plan you will create a total protection health plan that will offer you maximum protection.
