North Carolina Health Insurance Companies

There are five North Carolina health insurance companies that we recommend that offer the best plan options and rates in our state. Each of them varies in their plan designs, coverage, benefits and underwriting factors. 

 

It is important to note that each of these carriers that we recommend “own” their network. This means that you get the best network discount when a claim is submitted that you would from a carrier that “rents” their network. This could result in thousands of dollars in savings when a claim is submitted. Carriers that own their network have more leverage to negotiate prices with the doctors and hospitals than carriers that rent their network (little leverage).

HumanaOne is a PPO network provider that offers a large network of health care providers across the state.  HumanaOne individual plans are offered in 22 states and their network of doctors is nationwide. Therefore if you travel out of your state, you will be able to find in network coverage in the event you need medical attention. Humana has one of the best HSA plans available in North Carolina. Their traditional copay plans are also very comprehensive and have some unique options that can be chosen to make them fit some of the tightest budgets.

 

 

WellPath is also known by their parent company name of Coventry Health Care. WellPath is a PPO network provider that offers many different types of plans that can be fit to suit your needs in either a traditional plan or a tax saving HSA plan. Their copay plans come with unlimited office visits and you won’t need a referral to see a specialist.  WellPath has some of the best children rates (age 2+) available in North Carolina and if you are looking for child only coverage this is a great plan to consider.

 

 

 

Cigna is the newest of North Carolina health insurance companies to enter our market for individual health insurance. A strong player in the group market for many years, Cigna just started offering individual coverage for North Carolina residents in July 2009. Like Humana, they have a national network of providers. Their copay plans are very competitive to others on the market and comprehensive in their coverage. Various deductible options can be chosen to make the plans fit your budget.

 

UnitedHealthOne is the brand name used for plans underwritten by Golden Rule, a UnitedHealthCare company. As a health insurance industry leader, UnitedHealthcare's Golden Rule has been an innovator of quality, health insurance products for individuals and families for more than 60 years. Today, under the UnitedHealthOne brand, Golden Rule and its affiliated companies offer health plans to individuals and families who buy their own coverage in 40 states and the District of Columbia.
